What Is The Jim Popp Ride For Cancer Research?

'Ride for Jim' is an epic fundraising bicycle ride that will last from June-September 2008.

The goal of raising $50,000 will take everyone's help, so we encourage you to donate or support us any way you can!

A father and son team of Jack and Philip Haar, joined during various sections by friends and family, will begin riding eastward from Eugene, Oregon and follow the classic Bikecentennial route to Yorktown, Virginia.  This route covers over 4,500 miles in all and the ride will take approximately three full months to complete.

Why Ride Across The Country?

Jim was a dedicated athlete, and we want to meet people all across America to spread awareness that cancer research needs all the support we can give.

We have been recreational bicyclers for many years and I have long dreamed of doing a trans-America ride.   Jim learned of the ride only a week or two before he passed away.  In fact, he had planned to meet up with the riders at some point during the journey.   Instead, Jim will be with us in spirit.

Our ride across America will require physical exertion, planning and focus, all of which were attributes Jim possessed in abundance.  The scourge of cancer either has or soon will touch everyone’s life in a very personal way.  We hope that by establishing the James D. Popp Student Research Fund some bright medical students will be recruited to the field of oncology and cancer research and that their efforts will lead to more effective treatments for cancer.  We believe this will be a most fitting and lasting memorial to a tremendously gifted and generous friend, Jim Popp, whose life was all too brief.
